Implanon is an effective long-acting reversible contraception, the size of a matchstick that is inserted by a trained doctor or nurse under the skin of your forearm. It’s contraceptive properties typically lasts for about 3 years and is suitable for most women during their reproductive age. It is 99.9% effective in preventing pregnancy.
Implanon releases steady dose of ethynogestral, a progestogen hormone, into the system, effectively preventing the release of eggs from the ovaries(ovulation) and it also thickens the cervical mucus, which prevents sperms from moving through the womb to fertilize an egg. It also thins the endometrial lining, the lining of the womb. Even though the egg is fertilized, this prevents it from attaching to the womb (implantation).
Implanon is safe to be inserted at anytime during the menstrual cycle if you are certain that you are not pregnant. If the Implanon is inserted in the first few days of your menstrual cycle then there would be no need to add in additional method of contraception. However if the Implanon is inserted at any other time during the menstrual cycle, additional method of contraception may be needed. Implanon is safe to be inserted right after giving birth and during breastfeeding.
This is a suitable contraception for women who want a reliable, long acting method, without the hassle of remembering everyday to take the pill or the inconvenience of using the condom during intercourse. Other advantages of the Implanon would be reduction in period pain, improvement of any acne problems, in some patients, the periods will be light or no vaginal bleeding at all.
